Media Factory Production Assistant (1 FTE, non-exempt)
40 hours a week, reports to Media Factory Production
Services Director

Description:

The Media Factory Production Assistant works directly with the Media Factory Production Services Director, Media Factory Studio Manager, and other production personnel to record and deliver high quality video productions and support the needs of Media Factory Community Producers. This person has a strong commitment to the field of community media and to the principles of Free Speech. They cover studio production shifts, record community meetings and events, and assist on fee-for-service work, as assigned. The position requires a high level of professionalism, excellent communication skills, technical video production skills, problem solving skills, attention to detail and the ability to collaborate with others in dynamic situations.

Responsibilities:

  • Staff the Media Factory reservation counter, answer phones and fulfill community producer equipment reservations
  • Support community producer TV studio productions
  • Provide editing and technical support to community producers
  • Record and edit school board and municipal meetings, lectures and community events as assigned
  • Support Media Factory fee-for-service work by directing, shooting, and editing projects as assigned
  • Act as a primary backup for production coverage in the event of unexpected absence or added meeting
  • Deliver member workshops or trainings as assigned
  • Assist the Production team with the training of Production Department staff
  • Assist with the general upkeep of the TV and radio studios, staff equipment room, and internal production equipment
  • Assist with the preparation for and departure of field crews and equipment
  • Other Duties as Assigned

Requirements

  • Minimum of one year professional experience in Video Production or related field
  • Commitment to the field of community media and to the principles of Free Speech
  • Ability to work week nights and weekends
  • Video production and editing experience
  • Ability to represent the Media Factory professionally in the field and studio
  • Strong communication skills
  • Valid driver’s license

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift 40 pounds and roll production carts with 80 pounds of equipment
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk
  • Prolonged periods of standing during video shoots
  • Workplace Environment
  • Off-site work is required for this position and conditions may vary
  • The Media Factory is a busy office environment with frequent interruptions from other staff and the public
  • The Media Factory offices contain computers and other equipment essential to running a television channel and broadcast radio station, and as such there is a consistent level of background noise
  • Media Factory offices are air-conditioned and require temperatures around 72 degrees to keep essential equipment cool

Pay

  • $20.00 - 20.90 per hour plus benefits

Media Factory Field Producer/Production Technician 

(part-time, non-exempt)

reports to Media Factory Production Services Manager and Assistant Production Services Manager.

The field producer/production technician works directly with the Media Factory Production Services Manager,  Assistant Production Services Manager, Media Factory staff, and other per diem production personnel to record high quality video productions and to support the needs of Media Factory Community Producers by staffing studio production shifts. This person has a strong commitment to the field of community media and to the principles of Free Speech. The position requires a high level of professionalism, excellent communication skills, technical video production skills, problem solving skills, attention to detail and the ability to collaborate with others in dynamic situations.

MEDIA FACTORY 360 INTERNSHIP

Media Factory invites people interested in the media industry to apply for our Media Factory 360 Internship Program. The 8 week paid internship introduces those interested in a career in media to a full-circle view of the jobs that make a community media center operate, while also completing a personal portfolio project.
 

What to Expect:

  1. Weekly meetings with the internship team (Tuesday 11am-1pm).
  2. A rotation through production, education, marketing, and distribution departments to shadow, support, and learn. This may include:
    1. A shift working with a Production Technician to support community producers.
    2. The opportunity to assist on a production team in the field.
    3. Assisting the education staff to conduct a workshop.
    4. Creating a blog post or social media campaign.
    5. Learning about equipment repair and maintenance.
    6. Interviewing a radio programmer.
    7. Creating a playlist of curated content for the website.
  3. Additional time with staff in the department of your interest.
  4. Time to work independently on your own project. 

Time and Compensation:

10 hours per week for 8-10 weeks at $15/hr
